The Power of Open Mic Nights and Jamming Sessions

At the Temple of Art and Music (TAM), open mic nights and jamming sessions have become essential stepping stones for emerging musicians. TAM regularly hosts these events, including the beloved weekly British Blues Jam and Singers @ Sunday Spots, which have been staples since TAM’s inception. These gatherings not only help artists build confidence, refine their skills, and connect with potential bandmates, but they also create an immersive experience for audiences who play a vital role in supporting new talent.

For many musicians, TAM’s open mic nights offer a chance to step onto the stage for the first time in a welcoming, supportive environment. This low-pressure setting allows artists to test their sound, connect with the audience, and receive immediate feedback- all crucial for building the confidence needed to excel in live performance. These sessions help emerging musicians find their voices, grow in confidence, and hone their stage presence.

The weekly British Blues Jam and other jam sessions provide musicians with a live, hands-on workshop where they can experiment with different sounds, improvise, and collaborate with others. These sessions often spark connections that lead to lasting partnerships or even the formation of new bands. Many groups that perform at TAM today can trace their roots back to these very jam nights, born from the creative energy and camaraderie fostered at TAM.

Audiences at TAM are also an essential part of this experience. By attending events like Singers @ Sunday Spots or the Great British Blues Jam, audience members actively support the artists, providing the encouragement and energy that help musicians grow in confidence. When you come to TAM, you’re not only enjoying live music but also helping launch the careers of aspiring artists.

So, join us for a night at TAM to experience the joy of live music and play a part in the journey of the next generation of musicians.

Around My World In Sixty Songs with Dana Gillespie, Song VIII, Andy Warhol by David Bowie

Did you know that David Bowie's (‪@davidbowie‬ ) iconic song "Andy Warhol" was originally written for someone else? 🎤 In 1971, Bowie composed this quirky, acoustic tribute to the legendary pop artist for his friend, British singer Dana Gillespie. Gillespie's version of "Andy Warhol" was recorded in the same year and was intended for her album Weren’t Born a Man, which was released in 1973. While Gillespie's version is a gem, Bowie decided to include his own take on the track in his groundbreaking album Hunky Dory. The song captures Bowie's admiration for Warhol's influence on art and pop culture, blending folk-rock vibes with a touch of surrealism.

Dana Gillespie shares, "I don't really normally sing Bowie songs. They're quite hard to sing, but he did write this one song for me. It's Andy Warhol. He publicly announced it on the John Peel show that he'd written it for me." She adds, "If you listen carefully, you can hear Bowie singing as my backing singer. And then I reciprocated by doing backing vocals for him on the Ziggy Stardust Album."

In this episode of Around My World in Sixty Songs, Dana Gillespie takes us to the David Bowie World Fan Convention (‪@BowieConvention‬ ) Liverpool, where fans gather to celebrate the life and music of Bowie. 🌍🎶 For Song VIII, Dana Gillespie teams up with fellow Bowie alumnus Kevin Armstrong, who recorded the iconic song "Dancing In The Street" with David Bowie and Mick Jagger, and played in Bowie's legendary Live Aid performance in 1985. Join us on this journey as we explore the fascinating connections between Bowie, Warhol, and Gillespie, and how this song became a unique part of music history!

And a special shoutout to Andy Warhol would have been 96 on August 6th. 🎂🎉 Your influence on art and culture continues to inspire us all!
